The mechanism of action of sildenafil is due to the increased cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) level. This chemical is a vasodilator that increases the flow of blood into the penis and causes the relaxation of the muscle in the corpus cavernosum of the penis. When the cGMP level is raised, the penile blood flow is increased and the erection can be maintained.
